DEI Died This Year. Maybe It Was Supposed To
As the year comes to a close, it’s hard not to reflect on the state of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in organizations and society as a whole. Many have noted that DEI initiatives seem to have lost momentum and focus in the past year, leading some to wonder if DEI has died out.
But perhaps this decline was meant to happen. Maybe DEI needed to die in its current form in order to be reborn stronger and more impactful. Maybe the conversations and actions taken in the name of DEI were not as effective as they could have been, and a reboot is needed.
It’s important to remember that change often comes in waves, with highs and lows. Perhaps this low point in DEI efforts is a necessary step towards greater progress in the future. Maybe the death of DEI was the catalyst needed to spark a new era of true equity and inclusion.
As we look towards the new year, let’s not mourn the loss of DEI, but instead see it as an opportunity for growth and renewal. Let’s take this moment to reevaluate our approaches to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and strive to make meaningful and lasting change in our organizations and communities.
DEI may have died this year, but perhaps it was supposed to. Let’s use this moment to reflect, learn, and come back stronger than ever in our efforts towards a more just and inclusive society.
